Proclamation of 1763
- French & Indian War / The Seven Years War
- War was very expensive. Many Colonial and British soldiers lost their life. Britain is deeply in debt.
- To avoid more conflict and cost, Britain told the colonist they could not settle past the Appalachian Mountains.
- Colonists' ignored it
- It made the colonists upset because after the war, they weren't allowed to go to the west, which is what they fought for.
Common Sense - 1775-1776
- A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine
- Raised support for independence
- Called the King a Royal Brute. Did not think the colonies needed a king. The law was our king.
- It said there were no advantages to being part of Britain
- Paine said our goods would fetch higher prices without English involvement
- It made everyday people understand the need to desperate.
Writs of Assistance - 1767
- Townshend Acts set up a system to help officials enforce the import duties.
- Charles Townshend was in charge of British treasury. He wanted to dissolve the representative governments
- Writs of Assistance allowed officers to search ships and warehouses without stating what they were searching.
- Colonist see it as another violation of their rights, and they keep boycotting goods
- The colonists were mad because they thought they deserved the right to privacy and to keep what they owned, with out it being taken away.
